Lesley Owino’s star continues to rise for Nairobi United, and his latest lesson came under the bright lights at Nyayo National Stadium. In a bruising midfield duel against Azam FC’s Feisal “Fei Toto” Salum, Owino not only held his own — he left the pitch with fresh insights that could shape his career.
A night of fine margins and fierce midfield battles
The reigning Mozzart Bet Cup champions edged Azam 2–1 in a Confederation Cup clash on 25 January, but the headlines weren’t only about the scoreline. Dancun Omala struck early in the 13th minute, Jephte Kitambala levelled four minutes later, and an unfortunate Ernest Mohammed own goal in the 78th minute handed Nairobi United the win. Yet it was the midfield skirmish that captured attention: the seasoned Fei Toto, valued at Ksh45 million, against the hungry debutant Owino.
Lessons learned from a seasoned rival
Owino admitted the encounter was a measuring stick. He praised Fei Toto’s experience and singled out specific traits he plans to adopt.
“It was a good game and a good battle. I enjoyed playing against such an experienced player, which also helped in rating myself as a player. I have learnt a lot of things from him, including awareness, composure and playing with pace, aspects that will also help me in my career.”
Those three takeaways — awareness, composure, pace — read like a blueprint for a young midfielder eager to climb the continental ranks.
Still fighting for a quarter-final spot
Despite the morale-boosting victory, Nairobi United face a steep climb in Group B, currently sitting at the bottom with zero points in the quest for quarter-final qualification. Owino, however, refused to surrender to the numbers. He blamed missed chances and lapses in concentration, especially at the back, but vowed collective improvement.
What comes next
The rivalry is far from over. The two midfielders will meet again on 1 February when Azam hosts the return leg at the Azam Complex. For Owino, the rematch is another classroom; for Nairobi United, it’s another chance to turn lessons into results.
